Chinese director Feng Xiaogang's much awaited epic "Back to 1942" (Trailer ) debuted with over 3 million yuan (about US$481,680) in box office on Thursday, November 29, 2012.
The figure has broken his own record, when his earlier film "If You Are the One 2" debuted with 2.5 million yuan.
Meanwhile, Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" has wrapped up its IMAX screenings to make way for "Back to 1942".
Feng says this is an international convention that IMAX screen providers should exclusively allow one film on line at a time.
"Life of Pi" is still available in 2-D and 3-D formats.
Lu Chuan's "The Last Supper" has also been released to compete with "Back to 1942".
