"Rush Hour" star Jackie Chan gave a free concert in Los Angeles Chinatown on Monday to promote his patriotic song "My Beloved Country."
The event drew a large audience of martial arts devotees as well as fans of the star, both American and Chinese.
The New Lucky Seven group, Chan's disciples selected through a Chinese TV talent show, performed their single, "My Master."
To the delight of Chan fans, martial arts were a big part of the evening. Chan invited Korean singer Yoo Sueng-jun, an accomplished martial artist, to demonstrate some moves in addition to singing a song.
Next, the Shaolin Warriors of Chinatown, a group from China that regularly performs at Chinatowns, took the stage followed by martial artists from the China Shandong Laizhou Martial Arts Association. Each performance depicted different styles and all were thrilling to watch.
The highlight of the evening was when Chan sang his popular song, "My Beloved Country." Chan invited children to join him on stage and took time to teach them some of the lyrics, which they then sang together with him.
Chan told Xinhua that the song expresses a positive message about love for one's country and applies to everyone of every nationality.
"People can live a better life only when their country gets strong," Chan said. "If different countries become strong and coexist in harmony, there will be everlasting peace in the world."
Chan said that besides promoting his song, he was also on a charity mission in Los Angeles.
Chan has been praised by U.S. government officials for his efforts to encourage youths to practice martial arts, quit drugs and go back to school after dropping out.
The free concert was sponsored by the U.S.-China Artists Union, the China Shangdong Laizhou Martial Arts Association, the Los Angeles Chinatown Business Improvement District and the Los Angeles Chinatown Corporation.
