As the main area where the Eco-Forum Guiyang 2010 is held, Huaxi district, Guiyang City, is constructing a wetland park to preserve its original ecology. Huaxi is the watershed of the Changjiang River and the Zhujiang River (the Pearl River), thus benefits the water conservation and control of climate change of Guiyang City.
Planned and designed by the country's best landscaping designers, the Huaxi Wetland Park is the biggest of its kind in Guizhou Province. The 609-hectare park, and other eco-systems nearby, provides a nature habitat for various kinds of plants and animals.
Xiong Xingping, the Deputy Director General of Huaxi landscaping administration, says the park will offer different viewing areas and will have great value in terms of ecology, economy, society and scientific research.
The community is also involved in keeping the wetland eco-balanced and improving the environment. Local villagers, for example, have solar energy systems to their houses in order to maintain a low-carbon lifestyle. They have also built roads for bicycles only, to espouse the virtues of an environmental-friendly way of getting around.
During the construction of the wetland park, the landscaping designers also took the whole layout of the city into consideration. It has thus become not only an environmental beacon but also one of Guiyang's architectural attractions.
