An exotic costume festival displaying the finery of a variety of ethnic Tibetans is a feast for both eye and camera lens. A recent festival provided a rare insight into the richness and subtle diversity of the traditional garb of the people of the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The prefecture is located on the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

The heart of the Kham domain, one of three branches of Tibetan culture, Ganzi also lies at the centre of the Shangri-La travel region which stretches across the provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet.

Several ethnic minorities, of which the Tibetans are the dominant group, inhabit this corner of Sichuan. Although they are distinct in their folklore and customs, they all share a passion for striking colours, a fact reflected in their clothes, head-dresses and jewellery.

The intricate embroidery, patterns and weave of their costumes contain the stories and mysteries of their history and religious beliefs and are infinitely rich in symbolism.

These pictures, taken at a recent costume festival, are a glimpse into their world.
