Nigerian Fans Bemoan Nigeria's Loss

Nigeria's loss to Argentina in the final of the Beijing Olympics men's soccer meant different things to different fans in various parts of the country.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, some fans in Benin City think that the country's Under-23 side should have lost to any other team except Argentina.

The fans see the Argentines as Nigeria's perennial opponents, who have become the country's nightmare, beginning with the 1994 World Cup tie in the U.S., where the South Americans won 2-1.

Saturday's clash in Beijing brings to four the number of times both countries have met at all levels.

The Nigerians beat the Argentines 3-2 at the final of the Atlanta Olympics but lost at the Under-20 World Youth Championship in the Netherlands 1-2.

A fan in the Edo capital, Idris Ibrahim wondered why Nigeria should lose again to Argentina.

"Why must we lose to the same team again. I am not saying the players did not play well but this could be bad when next we meet them again in future most especially at the senior level," he said.

"The present crop of players will likely form the nucleus of the next Super Eagles and we will be psychological at a disadvantage when any of our national teams meets the Argentines," Ibrahim said.
