The Beijing Olympic torch relay kicked off its leg in Shijiazhuang in northern Hebei Province on Tuesday morning.

Retired shot put athlete Li Sumei ran the first segment after the relay started at 8:15 a.m. in Xipaipo. Xipaipo was the location of both the Communist Party of China and People's Liberation Army headquarters in the late 1940's.

After finishing a 1.5-kilometer route in Xibaipo, the flame moved to the urban area of Shijiazhuang, where 188 torch bearers will relay the flame on a 9.8-kilometer run.

Shijiazhuang is the first leg of the torch relay in Hebei, before it heads to Qinghuangdao on Wednesday and Tangshan on Thursday.
