3. Iranian rejection of incentives (16)
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday rejected a European plan to offer his country incentives, including a light-water nuclear reactor, in return for giving up its uranium enrichment program.
Ahmadinejad asserted that Iran has the right to a civilian nuclear power program.
"...we do not want anything beyond what are our legitimate rights. We demand our rights within the Non Proliferation Treaty and will not accept a little less or a little more than our rights..."
Iran may face sanctions from the United Nations Security Council if the package fails to produce an agreement.
On Tuesday, senior diplomats and EU officials said tentative plans were being discussed by France, Britain and Germany as part of a possible package to be presented to members of the Security Council.
4 Russian React (17)
Meanwhile, Russia has reiterated its opposition to the threat of sanctions or the use of force against Iran.
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Tehran should be put into dialogue over its nuclear program rather than punished.
"Before thinking how to punish Iran for something it might reject, one probably ought to concentrate efforts on the search for solutions that would draw Iran into a dialogue."
Diplomats said a six-nation meeting on the Iran standoff had been postponed.
5£®Typhoon Chanchu (12)
Typhoon Chanchu hit the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian on Thursday, killing at least 11 people and leaving four others missing. Meanwhile, thanks to a timely weather forecast, more than one million people in the two provinces have been safely evacuated from the typhoon-hit region.
An official with China's Minstry of Civil Affairs, Gao Yuqing, says the central and local governments were able to make preparations thanks to Chinese meteorologists' accurate predictions on the movement of typhoon Chanchu.
Head of China's Meteorological Administration, Qin Dahe, says China's forecast accuracy rate on typhoons is now close to that of developed countries.
