Hide A Dagger within A Smile

2006-01-14

Part I: Opening and Letters

A: Hello and welcome to Listeners' Garden. I'm LPC.

B: And I'm XH.

A: In today's program, on the request of Singaporean listener Alex Long, we'll provide some info on the xiao, a vertical bamboo flute and one of China's most famous wind instruments.

B: Following that , we'll try out another Chinese idiom, with the expression (ЦÀï²Øµ¶), meaning to "Hide a dagger within a smile".

A: But to experience genuine joy, let's first check our mailbox for some more interesting letters from our listeners.

Bill Watters from the USA
Ni Hao! Today Dec.31 I heard your program with greetings and listeners¡¯ messages. Thanks for reading my e-mail on the program. You wondered what Chinese movies I had watched recently. One was Kung Fu Hustle. The other was The Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The new King Kong movie is also very popular here, but I've yet to see it. Wishing you all a very happy, healthy and safe 2006. Oh! and Thanks for the QSL card, showing a Chinese Pangolin. It¡¯s the first time I¡¯ve seen this animal. Host: So what do you think of those Chinese movies you mentioned? In fact, if you¡¯re interested in Chinese film, you might want to check out a recent feature on In The Spotlight, when we had a look at the domestic film industry, which enjoyed its one hundredth anniversary in 2005.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Listeners' Garden is a new, expanded version of the previous Listener's Letterbox. Broadcast on our home page at "Online Radio" every Saturday (Beijing time), it is a program for the weekend - relaxed, with a bit of humor, and also, we hope, informative, as we answer listener's questions about China, teach them some Chinese, and much, much more. The weekly Chinese idiom and the story behind it offer insights into Chinese culture, history and humor. On Culture Vulture Time, guests discuss anything that relates to culture. And, of course, we must have a music break, during which we try to play things that are rarely heard on other programs (we also welcome listeners' requests.)
