“Sorry, I don’t know anything about this. If I told you, I would have to quit my job.”

This is the response that a customer gets when he received two starkly different reports after he had his phone examined.

Mr. Xie spent more than 1800 yuan to buy a cell phone on China’s online shopping platform Taobao. The retailor promised him a brand-new, genuine product, and a three-fold compensation if it isn’t. Taobao underwrote the promise as well. However, when Mr. Xie received the delivery, he found the phone was a refurbished one, not exactly brand-new.

He contacted Taobao customer service, and was told to provide evidence. He followed the instruction and had his phone examined by China Certification and Inspection Group. The report said the phone was refurbished.

He contacted Taobao again, but was told he didn’t follow the protocols. Mr. Xie followed the protocols and confirmed that he had received the phone. Then he contacted the Taobao-designated insurance company to have the phone examined again.

However, a new report said the phone WAS a new one. Mr. Xie was puzzled and questioned the examination report. After that, a second report by the same examiner said the phone was refurbished. Mr. Xie demanded an explanation and was given the response that we’ve just heard.
