“The test flight is significant because it makes China the fourth nation to produce biofuel, following the US, France and Finland. In the next step, we’ll plan to build a bio-diesel facility in Zhenjiang with a capacity of 100,000 tons.”

Lv Dapeng, spokesman of Sinopec comments on the successful test flight powered by China’s self-developped biofuel.

An Airbus A320 operated by China Eastern Airlines flew 85 minutes on biofuels made mainly from palm oil and recycled cooking oil.

The biofuel produced enough power during the test flight and "was no different from traditional fuels," according to Captain Liu Zhimin and co-pilot Zhou Xiaoqing.

The biofuel is produced by China’s top oil refiner, Sinopec. If it passes certain reviews, Sinopec will be granted the country's first permit of its kind for commercial use of biofuel.
