Related: China to Approve Telecoms Restructuring Soon
China on Friday announced a revamp of the telecoms sector, leaving the country with three industry giants able to provide both fixed-line and mobile services, Sohu IT reported.
The parent company of Hong Kong-listed China Mobile Ltd., the world's biggest mobile telephone operator, will acquire the national railway's fixed-line unit, China Railcom or China Tietong, and turn it into its wholly-owned subsidiary, the report said.
Wang Jianzhou will continue to lead the company as General Manager.
China Unicom's GSM mobile business will join with China Netcom Group to form a new China Unicom, according to the plan.
China Telecom Corp, the country's top fixed-line operator, will acquire China Unicom's CDMA mobile telephone business.
The reshuffle of the industry is seen as a precursor to the issuance of licences to operate third-generation (3G) high-speed wireless services.
