Reactions after Earthquake

The 7.9-magnitude earthquake in Wenchuan County has so far killed around 10,000 people. Tremors could be felt over more than half the country. Ever since the disaster took place, people have been voicing their concerns about the earthquake. Let's have a listen to some opinions now in Media Spin.

A commentary in Modern Express commends the China Earthquake Administration for breaking the news of the quake within 10 minutes via Xinhua. The timely announcement of figures and facts and has successfully avoided rumors and confusion.
 
On Jiangxi Net, a commentary says modern technology such as internet and mobile phones made communicating during the crisis easy. Not only did people get to know about the quake right after it happened, they also had easy access to articles explaining what to do and how to offer help during an earthquake. However, there were some people spreading rumors on the internet as well. The commentary called on people to avoid believing such rumors and have faith in our country's ability to face the disaster.

A columnist in China Youth Daily described how he deliberately walked out onto his balcony when the earth was shaking to see how others were reacting to it. Within half an hour of the quake, he learnt ways to protect himself during such emergencies from the internet. The writer said people shouldn't think such a disaster will never happen to them. He suggested everyone equip themselves with knowledge on what to do during an earthquake and other natural disasters.

On China Web, a commentary says national leaders provided essential moral support to the people of China through their heartwarming messages. It said the leaders' presence in the worst-affected areas would motivate the entire nation to help the survivors. Furthermore, the local government plans to immediately set up emergency relief headquarters to allocate resources and co-ordinate manpower. The systematic way in which rescue operations have take place has assured people that China can face any challenge.
