The 13th CCTV Youth Singing Competition once again captured millions of eyeballs nationwide. Beyond the art of singing, the quiz segment which tests the contestants' general knowledge was a big attraction, as in the past few years. That's partly because of the the judge, writer-scholar Yu Qiuyu, always gives illuminating reviews. On the other hand, a group of viewers are also interested in seeing the well-known scholar make a fool of himself in TV. At the end of the competition, Yu Qiuyu officially declined to judge the next season of the competition.

A commentary in Beijing Youth Daily reviews how the singing competition has changed over the decades. It was once an important talent competition that created superstars. But it is no longer the case. Interestingly, Yu Qiuyu's reviews and the audience's desire to see others making fools of themselves have become the main attractions of the show. After Yu announced his intention to quit, organizers are yet to decide whether to make the competition an entertaining variety show or retain its current theme of arts and culture.

Another commentary in Nanfang Daily quotes Yu Qiuyu's open letter in which he says his aim of popularizing culture through a TV show has been achieved. However, the writer thinks that the topics Yu has so far discussed in the singing competition are barely relevant to society. And one can never gauge how much the audience has actually learned. Thus, he disagrees that Yu has achieved what he wanted. The commentary also says that Yu shouldn't continue participating the show to meet the demand of other.

Another commentary on China.com salutes Judge Yu Qiuyu for presenting profound cultural knowledge in a captivating manner. The TV audiences love him and enjoy his reviews. At the same time, the writer criticizes Yu for using the opportunity to express himself, to show off his knowledge without considering the feeling of the singers and their level of understanding. Overall, the writer supports Yu's decision to quit so that he can focus on his work as a scholar, while the audience gets the chance to see a new judge for the show.
