Cleaning-up of Telecom Packages
    2007-10-09 16:42:32     CRIENGLISH.com

China's Ministry of Information Industry has ordered the cleaning-up of various telecom packages. So far, over 40,000 subscription and payment packages have been called off across the country to curb exaggerating favorable terms and ambiguous charges.

What are the responses from the media? XX is here to tell us more.

Reporter:

A comment in Dazhong Daily says a lot of the telecom packages are traps for consumers, who are confused by various price-cuts. The information released from the ministry will shock people as they never knew there were so many similar packages out there.

The comment attributes the problem to a lack of regulation and management on the telecom charging system.

It says the telecom industry in China is still monopolized and profit seeking encourages deceit behaviors. Therefore, a market competition mechanism should be introduced in order to regulate competition in the telecom industry to protect the rights of the consumers.

Yanzhao Metropolis carries an article saying it is time to call off all package services, which the newspaper says are designed to lower charges and expand the market. It has already fulfilled this mission, but has also brought many problems.

It is also time to stop telecom companies from making huge profit from these packages.. China Mobile's daily profit topped 200 million yuan during the first six months, and their carefully designed packages surely have contributed a significant part.

Last but not least, the comment says this cleanup might not stamp out all package operations. It is very likely that endless new packages will be issued and consumers will be the ones to pay the prices.
