Sky Rocketing Price of Pork
    2007-05-24 17:52:40     CRIENGLISH.com

Like the stock market, the raising price of pork has become a hot topic among people recently. In some places, the pork can be sold at 20 yuan per kilo. And the trend is other products have also seen a rapid increase in price along with pork.

Of course, the media have had plenty to say about the sky rocketing price ever of pork, so let's follow Jou Jing to take a look.

Reporter:

An opinion from Xinhuanet.com blames the price hike on the recent development of bio-energy. Nowadays a great proportion of pigs are raised in specialized pig farms fed on processed food made primarily from grains like corn. The recent heat on biological energy has brought up the prices of grain. This in turn has contributed for the growing prices of pork. The opinion further says although biological energy sources might be important as vehicle fuel, it may threaten the food safety of the country as well as the development of agriculture as a whole. The high price of pork is just a signal of what could come.

The Beijing Youth Daily has one opinion pointing out that the latest price hike of pork is only part of a general price increase on food which started from the late last year. And the trend continues. People's lives will be greatly affected by the growing prices of necessities in daily life. Apart from low income families, more middle income families are falling victim to the price hikes. The government can't just leave the situation to the market. The opinion suggests that the government should either control prices, or raise overall salaries.

An article from Pearl River Evening Paper says pig farmers are in an embarrassing situation. They surely haven't expected the prices to grow like this. It's most likely they'll increase the number of animals. However, when the piglets are big enough for sale, they may find the price falls down. The article cites a local official saying they predicted the growing price of pork months ago. It asks why the government didn't release the information and help farmers raise more pigs at that time and prevent the price hike?
