Nowadays, many retired people are re-hired by employment. They have regular incomes, the pensions, and the employers do not need to cover their insurance. Moreover, they don¡¯t need to sign a contract. However, there is a heated discussion on the practice.
Let¡¯s follow our reporter to take a closer look at what the media say.
Reporter: An expert from the Renmin University says on Information Times, this is unfair to the younger job seekers. There is already a surplus of labour supply and the re-employment of about 10 million retirees makes it worse. On the legal side, retirement means the retirees are no longer capable of working and that¡¯s why the government provides the entire retirement benefit package for them. With the pension in hand, they are still competing with younger people in labor market. That¡¯s unfair.
A counter-argument on Red Net holds that, in real life scenarios, though, the retired may still be able to work. And the right of work should not be taken away by law. The only difference is that the government is no longer obliged to provide employment to them any more. It¡¯s perfectly normal and legal for employers to re-hire them in a market economy. Meanwhile to ban employers from hiring retired people will not only create new injustice but also does little to alleviate the pressure on the labor market.
However, it also points out the disadvantages to such a practice outweigh the advantages. An aging workforce is a structural defect and may harm the national economy, which is more serious an issue than the shortage of energy resources.
As to jobs taken away by the older workforce, some people disagree. As another opinion from Rednet notes, the age limit for many jobs is very strict, more so than in beauty contests. Furthermore, the retired have different professional strengths as compared with the younger workforce. An important fact is labor resource is different from talent resource. There is a redundant of labors but a shortage of talents in China. The retired people are a huge and valuable talent resource.
