Recently, a proposal has been circulated through internet, calling on Han Chinese athletes to wear Han style clothes at the 2008 Olympic Games. It has received support from more than 20 other websites and many netizens but there is some criticism as well. Here's WJ to give us today¡¯s media reports.
Reporter: One report from the People's Daily has carried both sides of the argument. The supportive side says the proposal will help recall Chinese traditional culture. It explains Han style clothes refer to the clothes Han people wore them before the Qing Dynasty. This belief says Han clothes can strengthen the cultural identity and increase confidence in Chinese people.
One person even suggests Han clothes should be named as part of the National dress code. Another opinion advises academic robes in China should take the place of those clothes.
The opponents call the idea- prejudice against other ethnic groups in the multi-ethnic country of China.
One opinion says the issue of Han clothes actually reflects a culture problem. It's impossible to get the ancient culture back intact. What we really need is to create a new culture that absorbs the best of both ancient and modern, Chinese and western.
An opinion from the website of the People's Daily says some people are fascinated with traditional Japanese and Korean dresses they've seen in TV series. Indeed, traditional dresses are part of cultural identity. However, the hope to regenerate traditional culture by putting on old dresses is paying too much attention to formality. As long as Chinese people keep the essence of Chinese culture deep in their heart, it doesn¡¯t matter what kind of dresses they put on.
Another comment from the Hong Kong paper Dakungpao criticizes the call for Han style clothes calling it a mere show, and a game that actually has negative effects on rejuvenating traditional culture. Han clothes are just a label that can¡¯t carry the profound tradition of Chinese culture. There are actually the contrary, a shallow, showy style of promoting and goes against the Chinese tradition.
