The Chongqing Procuratorate Department has recently said that police should stop searching or arresting suspects when children or senior citizens are on the scene.

Today Michael will tell us how the media has responded to this announcement.

One Red Net commentator says that this practice shows a respect for people¡¯s lives. Old people and children will not be exposed to danger or scenes which may leave a lasting negative impact on them. It helps preserve the simple and beautiful world of a child¡¯s mind, and might save old people from the sad scene of parting with the criminals they love. It¡¯s a big step towards emphasizing humanity in the legal system, it is claimed. And ultimately it will help maintain the harmonious and stable development of the Chinese society.

Another commentary from Red Net also starts by approving the proposed amendments to arrest procedures, saying that it is all very humane. However, it also says the practice should be tailored according to the actual situation. The chances for capturing suspects are usually restricted. And sometimes, suspects will take advantage of the presence of children and old people. So the most important thing is that policemen should try their best to protect the innocent people on the scene, both mentally and physically.
