"Everyone has potential to overcome difficulties¡We all have reasons to breathe¡ Play with all your passion¡ Everyone is number one."
The song "Everyone is Number One" was written especially for the 2008 Paralympics. As the goodwill ambassador of the 2008 Paralympics, Hong Kong star Andy Lau sang, produced and helped write the lyrics to the song.
At the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics, Andy Lau watched the games for the first time and was deeply touched by the performances and spirits of the disabled athletes. From then on, he began sponsoring disabled athletes in Hong Kong. He said the idea for the title "Everyone is Number One" transpired long ago.
"I started sponsoring disabled athletes many years ago. After every game, I gave every one of them a golden medal, whether they had won or not. I think if you give your best effort, you are already number one."
In the music video for the song, Andy Lau acts as an athlete who lost a leg in an accident but still pursues his sports dreams. He folded and bound his left leg and wore an artificial limb to film the video. Every night after shooting, his body ached and he gained a deeper understanding of the trials handicapped people face.
"As a healthy person, I was clumsy with an artificial limb and felt many things were inconvenient. But disabled people may have to live like this throughout their lives. Their lives are much harder than ours, and I really admire them."
A key message in the song is that everybody has a reason to live and can succeed if he makes the effort. Andy Lau tries to convey the idea that everyone must strive for his own life.
"I have always believed that everyone has a gift. You may run fast, jump high or swim well. You must know what you are good at and lead a meaningful life."
In a recent public service announcement, Andy Lau runs alongside disabled athletes on his two healthy legs. He says the Paralympics are indisputably part of the Olympics.
"I think there is no difference between the Paralympics and the Olympics. Just as I performed as a healthy person next to the disabled athletes in the announcement, the Paralympics is as exciting as the Olympics. I hope more people will pay attention to the Paralympic Games."
Although was initially created for the Paralympics, "Everyone is Number One" was also selected as a candidate for the 2008 Olympic theme song thanks to the positive, encouraging message it conveys. Regardless of whether it is selected, the song expresses the true spirit of sports and life.
