MTV China announced on Friday that the BET Awards 2009 will be broadcast in China for the first time on July 5 Sunday. Established in 2001 by VIACOM'S Black Entertainment Television, the BET Awards celebrate the achievements of African Americans in music, sports, and other fields of entertainment.
The awards show was a tribute to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson who passed away from cardiac arrest in his home on 25 June. The original annual awards program was completely revamped to center its entire focus on commemorating the celebrated performer. Hosted by the dynamic Jamie Foxx, it was a non-stop standing ovation for Michael Jackson and his legendary career. A legion of A-list stars paid tribute to the King of Pop with special performances, emotional testimonials about what Jackson meant to them, and a beautiful, colorful set featuring images and montages of the star.
Held at Los Angeles' historic Shrine Auditorium, the show aired live in the United States on Sunday, 28 June with exhilarating live performances by Jay-Z, Kanye West, Beyonce, Maxwell, Ne-Yo, Mary Mary, Fabolous, Young Jeezy and Soulja Boy. There were also appearances by Queen Latifah, Taraji P. Henson, Idris Elba, Sherri Shepherd, Paula Patton, The O'Jays, Alicia Keys, Wyclef Jean and a very special appearance by Michael Jackson's sister, Janet. She spoke on behalf of the Jackson family to thank all of Michael's fans for their support during the family's difficult time.
