A: Happy New Year, everyone, and welcome to 'Listeners Garden' here on 'China Radio International'! I'm your host LPC.
B: And I'm JP. Happy New Year! It's great to be with you again for the first edition of 'Listeners Garden' in 2009.
A: Yes, thank you very much for continuing to support our work in the New Year.
B: As we step into January, most parts of China have entered their coldest season of the year.
A: But winter doesn't just mean coldness. It can also be full of fun. Skiing, for example, has become a trendy activity in China during the chilly winter period.
B: Right, it seems the bitter cold never cools people's enthusiasm for enjoying this fascinating sport. More and more people in China are catching on to the excitement of downhill skiing.
A: So on today's show, we'll meet some skiing fans and discover why they are so addicted to the exciting sport.
B: But before that, as usual we'll open our letterbox to see what our listeners have to say. Please stay with us.
A: Welcome to Letterbox. Over the past two weeks, New Year's greetings from our listeners around the world have poured into our mailbox and warmed our hearts in this chilly season. So here in our program once again we want to thank you all for your sweet wishes.
B: Yes, thanks very much for thinking of us at this time. Now let's open up our letterbox to see what else our listeners have to say.
A: First, we have Ian Evans from the UK: "2008 was quite a year for China with the dreadful earthquake then the fabulous Olympic Games. Throughout the year, CRIs News and Reports has kept me and many other people up to date on all the news from China and around the world. I assure you that I shall continue to listen to your broadcasts throughout 2009. My warmest wishes to everyone at CRI for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year."
B: Next, Jeff Bowes is also from the UK: "I continue to enjoy listening to CRI and greatly appreciate learning a lot about China through your shows. These programs give me a feeling of pride as I consider myself a member of the CRI family."
A: Hello, Ian and Jeff, thank you very much for continuing to support CRI in the New Year. It also makes us proud to have so many dedicated listeners in our CRI family.
B: Yes, and it's a great pleasure to hear from you from time to time. Now we have some listeners from the US. Kelly Bogus writes in to say:
A: "I am writing to you from West Texas. I have been listening to CRI for many years, since I can receive your broadcast on my shortwave. I would like to thank CRI for these shortwave broadcasts. I have learned a lot from your programs. I want to visit China someday and visit your station."
B: Elizabeth Monac from the U.S. is also an old friend of CRI: "I have been a CRI English listener since the early 1980's. I enjoy all your programs, and throughout the years they have helped me understand more about Chinese culture. This was especially helpful when I received my musical training at the Julliard School, where I had the opportunity to collaborate with many Chinese friends. It is my dream to come to visit Beijing someday."
A: Thank you both for sticking with CRI for so many years. We really hope you can find time to visit China in the near future, and at that time, don't forget to call on us.
B: As Kelly and Elizabeth are looking forward to their tours of China, another US listener Bill Watters has already paid a visit to China around twelve years ago.
A: "I always have fond memories of the wonderful visit I paid to China. Everyone was very friendly and kind to me. And there are so many amazing and memorable places to visit. Time flies! My memories are so vivid to me that the trip seems as if it were only yesterday. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to visit your country." B: Rob Whiteside from Australia also cherishes the memory of his China tour: "I went on a conducted tour of China about one year ago. It was the best holiday that I have ever had. I saw the Chinese people as they are, warm and friendly to everyone. I hope I can visit your country again."
A: Glad to know our listeners enjoyed their tour in China, and I hope more friends can realize their wish of visiting China in the New Year.
B: Now let's move to Mukib Ahmed from India. "First of all I want to wish you all at CRI a happy new year. As a loyal listener of CRI English I find your programs simply great. The news items on the radio and on the Internet are both amazing. Normally, we tune in to the radio during the night and the sound quality in our place is wonderful.¡±
A: Thanks for your comments, Mukib. Our next listener Soumya Bhattacharjee is also from India:
B: "I'm a dedicated listener of your radio station. I'd like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year. I have received a lot of help from you almost every time I needed it. I'm delighted to be a member of your CRI family. In the New Year I hope our relationship will grow even stronger. I promise that I'll continue to be a loyal listener and please promise me that you'll always remain on the air."
A: Hi, Soumya, thanks for your good wishes and for your dedication to CRI. We promise you and all our other listeners that CRI will definitely be on the air, and you are always welcomed to stay tuned and share your opinions with us.
B: And next we have Amin Najmi from Morocco. "It's been a while since I last wrote to you. But I listen to your programs everyday. Listening to CRI has become a part of my daily life. I never feel bored when I'm listening to you. I don't know what words can best describe my fond feelings toward CRI. Please, if you want anything from Morocco, just let me know."
A: Glad to hear from you again, Amin, and thanks very much for your kind offer. We do hope you can keep in touch and continue to tell us what you think of our programs.
B: Now moving on to Philip M Machuki from Kenya: "2008 was a busy a year filled with many challenges. I want to thank the CRI team for your efforts in updating us on whatever is happening around the globe. The reception quality has been excellent for the entire year which enables us to enjoy your programs on a daily basis. Allow me to take this opportunity to wish the entire team at CRI a happy New Year. In 2009 I have plans to start monitoring your daily programs from Kenya. Is that OK with you?"
A: Thank you very much Philip for helping monitor our programs in the New Year. Naturally that's fine with us and we really do appreciate your efforts.
B: And that's all we have for today's letterbox. Listeners Garden will continue after the break.
