Israel's Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni has said that any Israeli decision to end fighting in Gaza will depend on a daily assessment of its military operations against the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Livin spoke following a meeting in Paris with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner.
"At the end of the day, Hamas is not only a problem to Israel but to the entire Palestinian people, they are a problem to those who understand what the nature of Hamas is. So what we are doing now is changing the equation, making a better reality to our citizens, stopping the rockets on Israel and I think even now after a few days of operation, we achieved changes. We targeted all, not all, but we affected most of the infrastructure of terror within the Gaza Strip and the question of whether it will be enough or not will be according to our assessment on a daily basis."
Earlier in the week, France, which held the European Union presidency until midnight on Wednesday, has been pushing for peace in Gaza and chaired an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers in Paris to discuss solutions to the conflict.
But Israel has rejected calls for an immediate 48-hour pause in its assault on Hamas. Livni reiterated that a truce depended on Hamas suspending rocket attacks on southern Israel.
The French President will travel to the Middle East next week, as France kept up the pressure on Israel to end fighting in Gaza.
Israel's assault on Gaza continued for the sixth day on Thursday.
Gaza health officials said that the assault on the densely populated and impoverished Gaza Strip has killed more than 400 people, including scores of civilians, and wounded more than 1,600 people.
