Abolition of local GDP evaluation
    2009-01-01 16:02:54     CRIENGLISH.com

An NPC Committee member points out that local officials focus on GDP growth too much in highlighting their achievements. She caused a stir by suggesting local governments should abolish local GDP evaluation and focus more on health, education, employment and environmental protection.

Let's see what's the media has to say.

An article in the 'Dazhong Daily' suggests that the problem lies in the fact that issues such as health, education, employment, and environmental protection are given little credence in the evaluation system. Therefore, increasing the importance of these aspects will be an effective means to improve the local evaluation system. The article also points out that the calculation of GDP statistics and supervision of the evaluation system need to be improved.

A review in the 'Yangtze Evening News' asserts that GDP is merely an economic accounting method and that it should not be the crux of the local officials' distorted idea of evaluation. As long as those wrong idea about achievement existed, the cancellation of the local GDP evaluation would not change anything. Only by setting up an evaluation system that respected public opinion, the importance of GDP will be reduced. The wrong development model caused by GDP worship can be gone.

A commentary in the 'Procuratorial Daily' believes that abolishing the local GDP evaluation would be an effective response to the current economic difficulties, which are mainly caused by insufficient consumption. The paper says the cause of insufficient domestic consumption is the result of local officials' blind pursuing GDP.
