A photograph recently reproduced in the local media has quickly caught the attention of the newspaper reading public.
It was taken during a government meeting, and showed a number of participants fast asleep, while the speaker gave what was later described as a lengthy speech full of empty talk.
The China Youth Daily carried a commentary, saying the picture was a clear illustration of the inefficiency of such meetings. The paper says the speakers should take the most responsibility, while the participants are not entirely to blame for falling asleep.
The article notes that the listeners get bored and fall asleep because of the overlong, repetitive and dull speeches - which the paper says, are not really intended for the ears of the listeners who are present, but for their superiors who are not.
The paper says the speakers simply want to demonstrate their loyalty to their bosses with nonsense, clich¨¦s and empty words, without taking the audience into consideration.
The article suggests that people should discard those hollow words and stereotyped expressions, limit the time every speaker can stand at the podium, and introduce more Q&A sessions or interactive discussions between the listeners and the speaker. By doing this, the paper says, the efficiency and value of such meetings can be improved, and give participants something else to do other than doze off.
