Mumbai attack suspect sends letter saying attackers were Pakistanis
    2008-12-23 10:20:00     CRIENGLISH.com

The lone captured gunman from last month's deadly attacks in Mumbai has stated he is a Pakistani citizen in a letter handed over to Pakistani officials.

India's Foreign Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said that the suspect Mohammed Ajmal Kasab wrote in a letter that he and the nine other gunmen involved in the attack all came from Pakistan.

"In his letter, addressed to Pakistan High Commission, Kasab has stated that he and the other terrorists killed in the attack were from Pakistan and has sought a meeting with the Pakistan High Commission."

Pakistan High Commission spokesman confirmed late on Monday that Indian officials had turned the document over to the acting high commissioner and said Pakistan was "examining the letter."

India accuses a Pakistan-based militant group, Lashkar-e-Taiba, of masterminding the attacks that killed 164 people and has demanded that Islamabad take strong action against the banned group.

Islamabad so far has refused to acknowledge that Kasab is Pakistani, saying it has had no official confirmation of the suspect's citizenship.
