As Thursday marked the 30th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up drive, the 'China Daily' carried a commentary saying the decision to focus on economic construction, took the country in the right direction and pulled it back from the brink of economic collapse.
It says the reforms not only replaced the planned economy with a dynamic socialist market economy, but also helped break the ideological shackles that had dominated people's thinking and actions.
The paper says that despite 30 years of reform the country's agricultural foundation is still weak, some rural areas are still backward, the rich-and-poor divide has widened and economic growth in many parts of the country has come at the cost of the environment.
But it notes this is not the time to look back with regret. This is the time to resolve afresh to overcome these problems. As Chinese president Hu Jintao said, standing still or regressing will only lead to a dead end. This is a warning, the paper said, against falling back into bad habits.
The paper notes China cannot give up the reform and opening up just because there are problems along the way. Instead the country has to solve them by intensifying reforms and international cooperation.
