A local statute under consideration for issue later this month in Beijing would widen the range of people eligible for free legal assistance in the city.
The Beijing News published a commentary expressing its full support.
It said the ratification of this statute is in accordance with the aim of offering legal assistance to those who cannot afford legal services protect their rights.
However, the paper also points out that the implementation of this statute will require government help in both policy and finance. Citing examples of developed countries like Great Britain, where the total sum used in legal aid accounts for one percent of the country's gross national product, the paper says China still has to devote more financial resources to the field.
The article concludes that: to ensure the quality of legal assistance in China, the government should adopt concrete measures to support it. A complete policy system and ample financing will not only ensure more low income people can receive legal aid, but will also attract more legal talents to devote their professional skills to the cause.
