China's Ministry of Transport says the draft plan for the reemployment of tollgate workers, after fuel taxation reforms are implemented, has been handed to the country's cabinet, the State Council, for approval.
China's fuel taxation and reform scheme is scheduled to come into effect on January 1st.
From that date, drivers won't have to pay six categories of the current road and maintenance fees.
But this has raised concerns about the future for the current 200,000 tollgate workers.
Zhou Wei, an expert with the Transport Ministry's Research Institute of Highways, says the reemployment work should be carried out with governmental guidance.
"Solely depending on the transport ministry to solve the issue is not enough. Different government departments should cooperate to come out with concrete measures for a solution."
Meanwhile, experts reiterate that using fuel taxation to replace the current road maintenance fees can ensure the country's tax requisition in this area continues.
Guan Yuchang is also from the Research Institute of Highways.
"There are weak points and non-standard behaviours that hinder the governmental requisition on the current collection of road maintenance fees. Replacing the fee with taxation will ensure a more efficient and more standard use of that money."
