More Support Needed for Migrant Workers
    2008-11-18 09:39:40     CRIENGLISH.com

China has held a ceremony to award outstanding migrant workers who have made great contributions to the country's economic development. The ceremony awarded and paid tribute to 1,000 migrant workers who represent more than 200 million migrant employees across the nation.

An article in "the People's Daily" hails the event, saying it demonstrates the society's improved awareness of migrant workers' contributions and the need to protect their interests.

The newspaper notes that migrant workers from rural areas have taken the most arduous jobs in cities. What they have done to aid the country's urbanization process and improve the lives of urban residents is significant.

The article says it's now time for society to pay more attention to the welfare of migrant workers. It calls for migrant workers to be given the same level of salaries as urban residents. The commentary adds working conditions of migrant workers should be improved, and that their children should be given the equal access to education in cities as their urban counterparts do.

In conclusion, the newspaper says the society as a whole should take the responsibility of further improving the wellbeing of migrant workers and ensure public services are made available to them.
