Obama Elected US Next President
    2008-11-06 09:09:33     CRIENGLISH.com

Democrat Barack Obama has made history by becoming the first African-American to win the US presidential election.

Obama delivered his victory speech at a rally in Chicago's Grant Park.

"It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment, change has come to America."

The Democratic senator from Illinois sealed his historic triumph by defeating his rival John McCain in a string of wins in hard-fought battleground states, including Ohio and Florida.

He captured Virginia, too, the first candidate of his party in 44 years to do so.

His victory came as easily as the polls predicted. With key states falling his way, his achievement is compared to the victories of Franklin Roosevelt in 1932 and Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Celebrating his landslide victory, Obama told tens of thousands of people that the road ahead will be long, and the climb will be steep.

"We may not get there in one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there."

Minutes before Obama's speech, John McCain, the republican candidate who conceded the White House race, had paid tribute to his young rival.

"Sen. Obama has achieved great things for himself and for his country. I applaud him for it. Sen. Obama and I have had and argued our differences and he prevailed. No doubt many of those differences remained. These are difficult times for our country. And I pledge him tonight to do all in my power to help them lead us through the many challenges we face."

The new president's Inauguration Day will be Jan.20th next year.
