    2008-09-28 10:44:06     CRIENGLISH.com

Hello, and welcome to this edition of China Horizons.  I'm your host Man Ling. On today's show, we'll go to Xinjiang to see how trainings provided by the local government have been helping people in the ethnic groups find jobs or start business. On our travel segment, On the Road, we'll visit the home of lanterns¡ªthe city of Gaocheng, in Hebei Province, to explore its glorious past and present. But, first of all, we will tour one of China's biggest deserts-Kubuqi in Inner Mongolia-to see the new changes taking place there. Please stay tuned.

  • The Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games have closed but the Olympic spirit is here to stay. People's enthusiasm for sports has increased dramatically, not only in Beijing, but everywhere around the country. In east China's Zhejiang Province, a newly opened roller skating rink has become a new attraction for young people. Liu Yan has more. Listen to this part

  • In the just concluded "China Adolescents Science and Technology Invention Contest", one of the first prize winners was a teenager from western China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He received high acclaim from judges for his research on an environmental protection project. His thesis looked at how to protect soil from becoming salinised in Xinjiang and has helped him become eligible for college education without having to sit the college entrance examination. Wu Jia brings you his story. Listen to this part

  • Kashgar is a world-renowned historic and cultural city located in China's western frontier in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Children from five local ethnic groups in Kashgar gave a fantastic performance 'Kashgar Legend' in Beijing recently. Let's follow our reporter Xiaoyu to learn more. Listen to this part

  • Packing up a knapsack and setting off on a journey has become a trend for modern, adventurous travelers. Many backpackers choose to stay in Youth Hostels. In Beijing, there are also many youth hostels. Instead of an elaborate lobby, large rooms and broad French windows, there are instead; familiar bunk beds, homelike decorations and the earnest faces of backpackers to be seen. Ning Yan takes us to some hostels in this week's "On the Road".Listen to this part
