Hello and welcome to Voices from Other Lands on "China Radio International". I'm your host Zhou Jing.
The timeless love story of Aida will play in theatres across China in a newly conceived production with a debut in Shanghai set for Sept 25th.
With music by Elton John and Tim Rice, the Broadway musical is bursting with contemporary energy chronicling the love triangle between Aida, a Nubian princess stolen from her country, Amneris, an Egyptian princess and Radames, the soldier they both love.
Before coming to China, Elton John and Tim Rice's "Aida", winner of four 2000 Tony Awards, ran for a total of 1,852 performances, making it one of the longest running shows in Broadway's history.
I caught up with Casey Elliot the male lead in the musical when the troupe was busy rehearsing for their China tour in Tianjin.
That was Casey Elliot who plays Radames talking about the musical "Aida" and his own performing career.
You are listening to "Voices from Other Lands". I'm Zhou Jing. Time for a short break and we'll be right back with our next guest, Bob Nederlander, the CEO of "Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment", the company that brought "Aida" to China.
Welcome back. You're listening to "Voices from Other Lands". I'm your host Zhou Jing.
China is comparatively new market for musicals. However in recent years, audience here have seen a string of them hit local theatres, from classics like "Cats" and "The Phantom of the Opera" to contemporary shows like "Mama Mia" and "Aida". And more are expected to arrive soon! Earlier I talked with Bob Nederlander, the President of "Nederland Worldwide Entertainment" about his views on the development of the musical market in China. Part of the Nederlander family of Companies which has been in the live entertainment business for nearly 100 years, Nederlander Worldwide is a pioneer in exploring the musical market in China. Last year, it successfully introduced the Broadway musical 42nd Street to local audience.
That was Bob Nederlander, CEO of "Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment" talking about the musical market in China. And also many thanks to Casey Elliot the male lead in "Aida" for his time.
