2008-08-17 Reports from Developing Countries
    2008-08-17 08:28:32     CRIENGLISH.com

Hello and welcome to  Reports from Developing Countries on China Radio International. I'm Wu Jia in Beijing.

In this edition:

Bakassi Peninsula has been handed over from Nigeria to Cameroon.

APEC agrees on framework on combating natural disasters.

And Jordan is to bring Palestinian refugee students into national nutrition program.

Stay tuned.

The transfer of authority over the Bakassi peninsula from Nigeria to Cameroon has been a result of a long process of mediation between the two countries by the United Nations.

The resource-rich area was a bone of contention between the two West African countries throughout the 20th century, culminating in military confrontations in the 1990s. But the border dispute was resolved by a ruling of the International Court of Justice, allowing Nigeria and Cameroon to return to good neighbourly relations. Sammy Buo of the UN's Department of Political Affairs explains as he talks with UN radio¡¯s Diane Bailey.

Now let's hear some other news from the developing world.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation has agreed on a framework to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.

The framework, initiated by Peru and supported by Australia and Indonesia, will focus on monitoring volcanoes and hydrographic watersheds where the phenomenon known as "El Nino" is generated.

The strategy will enable all 21 APEC member economies to exchange technologies and resources so as to reduce the impact of natural disasters and speed up the delivery of aid to affected regions.

Jordan's King Abdullah II is bringing students from Palestinian refugee camps into the national nutrition program.

About 75,000 students supervised by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency are expected to benefit from this program.

There are 1.9 million Palestinians registered as refugees in Jordan, 400,000 of which live in refugee camps.
