With the words "Walk Challenge China 2008" printed on their fresh orange T-shirt, a group of Dutch visitors walked through Beijing's old summer palace, commonly known as Yuanmingyuan. The group is celebrating the Beijing Olympics in their own healthy way.
The visitors are members of the Dutch Walking Association. Hendery Bronkhorst is the leader of the group.
"The 'Walk Challenge China 2008' is an event we organized because we celebrate our 100 birthday this year. We combine walking with this occasion with enjoying the Olympics. So that's why we asked our members. We have 30,000 members in Holland. We asked them, 'Will you join us to the Olympics to Beijing? We can cheer up for our Olympic team. We'll go together to the opening ceremony.'"
More than 300 members made the trip. The oldest one is 82 years of age. Hendery believes walking is a healthy way for people to both experience the environment and enjoy themselves.
"It's a healthy way of enjoying the environment, people want to stay healthy. Walking is becoming more and more popular.
When people become older, it's difficult to do the intensive sports like football. So we look for healthy sports. You can see everything around you. To see Beijing, see the palace. That's a wonderful thing!"
These walking fans first visited Dalian in northeast China's Liaoning Province in July, then arrived in Beijing for the Olympics. The group is impressed by the Chinese hospitality and excitement for the games.
"China is big, very big. It's impressive. Everything is so great here. Large buildings, large stadiums, everything is large."
"They're so kind. They're waving at us. They said 'One world, one dream' and that is true. That is what I see here. Beijing is a fabulous city. It's very nice with all the flowers, all the parks and big buildings. It's a fairly clean city. We had lovely food. Olympic Games are very good for a city like Beijing."
More and more people from different countries are joining their walk in Beijing, and walking together to celebrate the Olympics.
