Hello, and welcome to this edition Reports from Developing Countries on China Radio International. I'm Jack Guard in Beijing.
In this edition:
Niue becomes the first country in the world where every student and teacher has a laptop.
Afghanistan and India agree to jointly fight terror.
And Indonesia and Australia have agreed to introduce reciprocal work and holiday visa arrangements.
Stay tuned
Niue will become the first country in the world where every school student and teacher has a laptop.
The small Pacific Island nation, home to 1,500 people, will also host the Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting later this month.
How has Niue prepared for the meeting?
CRI's Australian correspondent Chen Feng will tell us more:
About 500 laptops are being donated to schools in the country as part of the Oceania One Laptop Per Child initiative. The program aims to provide children in developing countries with effective and affordable educational devices.
Ian Thomson from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, an inter-governmental organization serving Island development in 22 Pacific Island countries and territories, is the project coordinator, overseeing the delivery of the laptops.
He says each laptop has wireless internet capability which will provide access to the resources from around the world. He adds every primary and secondary student and teacher in Niue will be given the device, which is designed especially for students.
Meanwhile, Niue's Premier Toke Talagi says, his tiny island country is well prepared for the Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting that it will host later this month.
Talagi told reporters that he is confident the island is ready for the task but he emphasized that he wants less theoretical discussion during the Forum and more emphasis on implementing programs in the region.
Talagi adds that he wants to see practical steps taken to help the region cope with the rising costs of fuel and food as well as climate change.
The Pacific Islands Forum was founded in 1971 and comprises 16 states in the south Pacific region. Forum Leaders meet annually to develop collective responses to regional issues.
