Our reporter Chen Xi has the details.
Reporter:
Qiao Lin, Chief Weather Forecaster with China Meteorological Administration, says the Chinese weather authorities are gearing up for the coming matches, and in particular, the opening ceremony.
"Besides the one-week pre-warning weather forecasts for the opening ceremony, we will also issue relevant alerts for potential extreme weathers such as torrential rains for both different sectors and athletes."
The official says that global warming has added to the difficulties in forecasting the extreme weathers.
Chinese authorities have reinforced the efforts in this aspect to perfect the current pre-warning system.
A China-made polar orbit meteorological satellite launched in May will provide ten-to-fifteen days weather forecasts, which will be in full operation before the Olympic Games.
Administration official Chen Zhenlin says top weather experts from around the world will convene in Beijing for the opening of the sports gathering.
"We will all work for the Olympics. This joint cooperation is very conducive to advancing the techniques and capability in weather forecasts. In addition, this form of operations that started in the Sydney Olympics will be promoted in the future."
The official adds that meteorological offices in the country will work more intensively, especially during the Games, to forecast accurate weather on an hourly basis. All forecasts will be distributed both in Chinese and English.
