There are a set of plans made to turn part of the regions affected by the May 12th earthquake into tourist attractions in hope of developing local tourism.
The Beijing Youth Daily published a commentary saying that the tourist attractions with its earthquake relics can help tourists draw a lesson from the tragedy, besides boosting local tourism.
But the paper states that although such measures could help people earn money from tourism, the current priority is still to guarantee the basic living conditions for the victims and good progress with reconstruction. The government should properly balance commercial interests and the interests of the local residents.
The paper goes on to stress that millions of victims have been affected by the earthquake and their feelings and suggestions deserve consideration.
The commentary suggests that scientific planning and specific analysis for opening tourist attractions in quake regions are absolutely necessary. Moreover, the opinions of the public should also be taken into account.
