Because of our tight schedule, we arrived at "Tianya Haijiao" at about two o'clock in the afternoon, the hottest time of the day when one should avoid outdoor activities, especially in the tropical Sanya.

It is one of, if not the best known, scenic spots, so we couldn't possibly pass up a visit to the island province of Hainan. And so, here we are, squeezing in two hours for this must-see area.

Many middle-aged Chinese inlanders' first sight of Hainan is Tianya Haijiao. In 1984, the singer Shen Xiaocen performed the song "Welcome to Tianya Haijiao" during the highly rated annual Spring Festival Gala on CCTV and the ballad was an instant success, making her one of the first pop stars in China.

We rode an electric cart through the park to escape from the UV rays and to enjoy the gentle cool breeze. That's why I love this city C its heat is simple and clear on the sunny days. Even if the temperatures climb to more than 30 degrees centigrade and the sun glares down relentlessly, you can find a shady spot to escape the sweltering discomfort.

Riding our cart through the lines of coconut trees, betel palms and other tropical plants, we caught a glimpse of some statues of local historical celebrities. We turned the cart round a corner and there we were on the beach.

The beach here is not especially special when compared with Sanya Bay, Da Dong Hai and Yalong Bay, but there are some interesting groups of huge grey stones.

The Rocks of the Sun and the Moon (Ri Yue Shi) rise out of the sea several meters off the bank. Although they are actually two separate rocks, from a distance, the two boulders look something like a husband and wife in an embrace.

Our cart stopped near Southern Heaven Rock (Nan Tian Yi Zhu), a boulder with a famous poem written by Fan Yunti inscribed on its top.

It's always pleasant taking a walk on any of Sanya's beaches, but here at Tianya Haijiao you soon find that some of the beach sand is black. A worker at the park told us the black sand is a result of its titanium content.

Our short tour ended at "Tian Ya" and "Hai Jiao" the two famous cliffs that stand side by side.

The phrase "Tianya Haijiao" literally means the edge of the sky and the rim of the sea and is always linked to powerful love in Chinese literature and art. "I will follow you to the edge of the sky and the rim of the sea," a heroine would emotionally say to her lover, in an attempt to communicate that they will never part.

Because of this, the resort at Sanya is a popular sightseeing destination for those in love.

At last, one final suggestion for those of you who are thinking about a visit here - bring sun protection! Our skin became red and burned even though we were only exposed to the sun on the beach for half of an hour!
