Although the word of winter seems to covey anything but warmth, I believe the idea of going skiing is sure to kindle the passion within many people. Today we will talk about skiing.

Today is meant to be a day to raise awareness of mother earth.  Since it was first launched in the United States in 1970, April 22nd has since become a day in which millions upon millions of people who are environmentally conscious do their part to help educate people about things such as pollution, environmental degradation, government policy and so on.  And with the Olympic Games coming here to Beijing this summer, environmental considerations are one of the top priority for the Chinese government as it prepares to host the 'green Olympics.'  So just how well is China doing when it comes to the environment ahead of the Games?  And what is happening right now when it comes to global warming from a scientific point of view?  Ni hao, you're listening to  People In the Know, your window into the world around you, online at www.crienglish.com here on China Radio International.  In this edition of the show, we'll be talking about World Earth Day.  So let's get started.

First, we're going to be discussing the environment from a scientific point of view.  For this we're joined on the line by Professor Wyss Yim with the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Hong Kong.

(Dialogue with Yim)

And after a quick break, we'll come back and talk with the UN Environment Programme about the environment and the Olympics.

Ni hao, you're listening to People In the Know, your window into the world around you, online at www.crienglish.com here on China Radio International.  I'm Paul James in Beijing.  In this edition of the show, we're talking about the environment to mark this, World Earth Day.  For more on the environment and the cleanup of the capital head of the Olympics, we're joined on the line now by Mr. Theodore Oben, Head of the UN Environment Programme's Sport and the Environment Program.

(Dialogue with Oben)

And with that we wrap up this edition of  People In the Know, online at www.crienglish.com here on China Radio International.  Environmental awareness is important.  And it's days like Global Earth Day, that help promote that cause.  Questions or comments for us can be sent to crieng@crifm.com.  For Executive Director Zhao Yang and Producer Yang Jingjie, I'm Paul James in Beijing.  Enjoy the day.
