The premiere ceremony for well-known Chinese director and screenwriter Wang Xiaoshuai's latest work "In Love We Trust" was held in Beijing on Thursday.
Starring Liu Weiwei, Cheng Taishen, Zhang Jiayi and Yu Nan, the film tells a controversial story of a middle-aged divorced couple who try their best to save their young leukemia-stricken daughter.
As both parents took tests and were turned down as unsuitable bone marrow donors, they learned that the most effective and quick way to save their daughter was to conceive another child who would have the exact type of bone marrow needed for the transplant. But both of them had already started new families. Such a solution could result in the breakdown of two marriages and pose a moral dilemma.
The film doesn't have a definite and promising ending as audience expected, but it seems to have reached a climax with the theme, just as the title suggests, the characters trust and forgive in the name of love. It artfully reaches the balance between the cruel reality and the love for every leading character.
Besides challenging a tough issue about inner struggles concerning loyalty of a divorced couple and how far parents can go to save their child, Wang said he also wanted to show his attitude towards middle-age people of China's middle class, who always have a sense of crisis.
"Everyone lives with uncertainties, including pressure, responsibility and sacrifice. But love is the best way to defeat all kinds of difficulties."
Adapted by Wang from a real story, the film also found an echo among the audience after its premiere. Phoenix TV hostess Xu Gehui said she was deeply moved by the story and she could understand the heroine's desperation and final choice.
"While I was watching it, I cried several times. It seems that there was something striking a deep chord in my mind throughout the film. I think I cried because I'm a mother now and I can easily identify and relate to the story. I'm very touched by her perseverance to proceed when facing dilemma in her life."
The original Chinese title of the film is "Zuo You" or "Left Right", an implication of the characters' conflicting mentalities. According to Wang, the English title" In Love We Trust" reflects the film's optimism.
"In Love We Trust" is expected to open in Chinese cinemas on April 1.
Dubbed as one of the sixth generation Chinese directors, Wang Xiaoshuai had won Grand Jury Silver Bear Award at the 2001 Berlin Film Festival for his work "Beijing Bicycle" and the jury prize at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival for "Shanghai Dreams".
In February this year, he picked up his second Silver Bear for the Best Script for "In Love We Trust" in Berlin Film Festival.
