China's first achievement awards for women were given at a ceremony on Saturday in Beijing to honor outstanding professionals from all walks of life. The theme of the event was "From Cocoon to Butterfly."

Ye Qiaobo, former speed skater and world champion, Hu Anmei, a rural teacher, and eight other successful women won awards for their career achievements.

The group award went to female scientists, who have contributed to China's lunar exploration project. The award for an institution dedicated to caring for women went to the Center for Women's Law Studies and Legal Services of Peking University.

Gynecologist Lang Jinghe was the only male honoree at the women's gala. He was selected for his medical skills and personal charm.

Former skating Olympic champion Yang Yang was one of the award announcers at the ceremony. She believes the event is a good way to recognize women's career achievements and that it can encourage more women to be the best they can be in their professions.

"I am very happy to be here for this event with so many excellent women. I am proud of them. I also think it is a good opportunity for other women to learn about how to do their best and contribute more to society, especially to show we can do anything if we try our best."

During the award ceremony, the ceremony organizers released a report on the state of professional women in 2007. The report details the challenges that professional women face in China's fast-changing society.

Bruno Wu, chairman of Redrock Capital Group attended the awards. He believes professional women play a very important role in the development of society.

"Professional women provide the original momentum for the development of society. To learn about and understand their challenges and special needs are very important in the building of a harmonious society."
