    2008-02-17 14:48:42     CRIENGLISH.com

Welcome to this edition of Reports from Developing Countries here on China Radio International.  I'm Zheng Chenguang in Beijing.
In today's program,

  • Small island states have called for immediate action to address climate change.
  • Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has urged naval forces in the Indian Ocean region to forge greater ties to combat terror and crime.
  • And the international community has given over 70 million US dollars to Cambodia to reduce poverty and improve its economy.

Representatives of island nations and other countries suffering from the effects of climate change have called for immediate action to help them avert or adjust to the greatest threats posed by the trend. They spoke at the General Assembly's high-level debate on climate change. UN Radio's Jerry Adams has the story.

That was a report from UN Radio.

Now, let's take a look at other news from the developing world.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has urged naval fleets of the Indian Ocean region to forge greater ties to combat terror and crime and conserve the ecosystem.

Singh also said naval cooperation was necessary to ensure the safety and security of the sea lanes, and mitigate disasters. The Indian Ocean region accounts for 70 percent of the world's natural disasters.

Representatives from the United Kingdom, Japan, the World Bank and the European Union have offered over 70 million U.S. dollars of grant aid and loans to Cambodia to reduce poverty and improve its economy.

The funds will be used to reform public financial management, private sector development, and natural resource and land management from 2007 to 2010

That wraps up this edition of Reports from Developing Countries. If you have any comments or suggestions, please email us at crieng@crifm.com, or send a letter to English Service, China Radio International, Beijing, China, postal code 100040.
