The National Aquatic Center, known as the Water Cube, officially opened after four years of construction with the China Open Swimming Championships, which run from January 31 to February 5.

With a seating capacity of 17,000 (6,000 permanent and 11,000 temporary seats), the Water Cube will host the swimming, diving and synchronized swimming competitions during this summer's Olympic Games.

The Water Cube, which incorporates an ETFE pneumatic die cushion structure, is the world's largest membrane structure building.

After the Olympic Games in August, the Water Cube will be refurbished as a multi-function recreation center.
