Anchor:A snow year, a rich year? Monday's snow indicates that the forthcoming Beijing Olympics will be the greatest Olympic Games ever. January 21 marked the 200-day countdown to the opening ceremony, bringing the country within seven months of the big event. The series of events, which included a staff uniform unveiling ceremony and the release of the Olympic volunteers' song, reached its peak at the promotional gala on Monday night. Our reporter Xu Liuliu has more.
Reporter: The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Song-Launching Gala was held in the new Olympic Basketball Gymnasium, which will serve as the main venue for the Olympic basketball preliminaries and finals.
Over 20 renowned singers, including Taiwan singers Jay Chou and Elva and Chinese mainland singer Huang Xiaoming, performed in front of over ten thousand audience.
China has waited almost 100 years to host the Olympic Games, and sees the August sports spectacle as an opportunity to showcase itself to the world. The promotional songs express the Chinese people's attitude toward the Games.
"We Are Ready!" is probably something that every Chinese wishes to say to the world as the Olympics approach. Comprised of the joint efforts of more than 130 singers from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan, the song has become a national hit. Despite the different faces and voices behind the message, they all share the same idea that the city is in full preparation mode, and the country is greatly anticipating the upcoming Games.
The public is obsessed with finding a chance to be part of the greatest show on Earth. More than 800,000 people have applied to be volunteers. Hundreds of thousands of candidates pursued the 19,400 domestic torchbearer berths, all keen to join in a historical relay that will see the flame travel an unprecedented 137,000 kilometers around the world.
The new Olympic volunteers' song "I Am a Superstar," sung by renowned Hong Kong musician Emil Chau at the gala, expresses the idea that no matter the size of their contributions to the Olympics, anyone doing his part is a superstar.
"I wish I were a wishing star, but twice as big and twice as far. Then I can make your wish come true!"
The 2005 song "Wishing Star," from Hong Kong singer David Huang, has also become a hit across the country.
With just 200 days to go until the opening ceremony, many Chinese people hope that the Beijing Olympics will be the most memorable Games in history.
One World, One Dream.
