Zhang Bohong

Post-eighties is a word to define people who were born between 1980 and 1990. During these years, more and more post-eighties millionaires have been created by a computer industry that requires more creativity and passion than experience. Recently, an 18-year-old musician was appointed as the CEO of an online computer game company, earning an annual salary of a million yuan, breaking the record of the youngest CEO in China. Our reporter, Yi Xiu, has the details.

Reporter: Before becoming the youngest CEO, Zhang Bohong had already attracted much public attention as the youngest creative singer on the Chinese mainland. This musical prodigy created several hit songs like "Native Beijinger", and "Chuang Qian Ming Yue Guang", or "Bright Moonlight Shines Over My Bed".

Born in 1988 in Beijing, Zhang Bohong had a very busy childhood, according to his memory. With his parents' expectations upon him, Zhang Bohong had to take on many other after-school training activities, like piano classes, something which he didn't like at the very beginning.

"I didn't want to learn piano in the first place, but later I got used to it. Gradually I got to know that my parents were right about this. They don't know much about music, so they wanted me to learn it. Actually, my parents were the people who led me into the world of music."

In 2003, when Zhang Bohong graduated from junior high school, he went to Los Angeles to study music production. Along with friends who are also huge fans of music, Zhang Bohong started to compose his own songs.

"We had our own band back then. We played in our spare time. The school provided excellent musical instruments and resources for us to produce music."

The hit song "Chuang Qian Ming Yue Guang", or "Bright Moonlight Shines Over My Bed" was written in America, to express the feeling of loneliness on Mid-Autumn Day which is a traditional Chinese festival for family reunions.

"This song was written in just two hours. I was bored and lonely. I missed my family."

Two years study at the music school helped Zhang Bohong to amass a basic knowledge in producing music. He began to send his sample music back to record companies in China. Finally, he received a response from a Beijing-based record company, and was asked to come back to China and work as a singer.

"I was excited and I hoped to be a singer. But I was a little worried too. I was afraid that my parents would not allow me to give up my study. However, fortunately, they were open-minded and encouraged me to grab this good opportunity."

This year Zhang Bohong's debut album "Reborn Missa" came out to public. The title song "Native Beijinger" won the top prize on several billboard rankings. Growing up in a Hutong, which is the term for 'alleyway' in Beijing, Zhang Bohong has a special sentiment for the living style of old Beijing, from which he got the inspiration for both the lyrics and the melody .He used many ancient Chinese musical instruments and Chinese Opera style in the song.

The popularity of "Native Beijinger" drew the attention of Jiang Yu, founder of a Shanghai online game company.

Jiang Yu only intended to use the song as the theme song for an online car race game. However, Zhang Bohong impressed him with many creative suggestions.

"I brought forward some ideas which were beyond the area of music. The producer was surprised and said "Young man, you've got your own ideas." And later, he began to tell me more about the business."

This 18-year-old young man later received a big surprise from the company. He was asked to be the CEO of the company. Why did a company want an 18-year-old greenhand to help with the business?

"Maybe I am in the similar age with the customers of the computer games. I know more about what the young people want. My swinging in could help them to produce games which could gain popularity among young people. Probably, this is a new operating concept for the company."

Zhang Bohong is quite confident and he shows that age couldn't bother him as a CEO.

"Age won't be a problem for me. The computer industry is different from others. It doesn't require that much experience and long-accumulated business connections. So, more and more post- eighties kids are coming to front in this industry. Creativity and freshness are crucial."

However, mere fresh ideas are not enough to become a CEO. Zhang Bohong says he has always paid attention to business management.

"I had thought to have my own record company before reaching my thirties. The idea of entering the computer industry had never occurred to me. However, I have read many books of the stories of young people who ride the whirlwind of the IT industry. Besides, I have taken courses in business management from time to time, although not systematically. But, that's far from enough and I will never stop learning."

Being the CEO of a company requires devotion of time and energy. When asked how to find a balance between the role of a CEO and the life pursuit of a musician, Zhang Bohong says,

"I will try my best to balance the two. Obviously there will be obstacles, but this is how things go. To me, being a CEO is a challenge, and music is accumulation of my life experiences. No matter what happens, I will never give up my dream with music, because that's where my interest lies."

Being in the spotlight, Zhang Bohong feels much more pressed than before. However, he is optimistic about his future.

"I didn't expect that I would be the focus after receiving the offer. You know, people are looking at me and they have doubts as to what an eighteen-year-old can possibly do. I do feel stressed since it would be my fault if it didn't work out. However, the job needs me to be optimistic, so I will adjust and adapt myself to the new life."

Zhang Bohong hopes that the game can be a success, but he also says that he wouldn't be discouraged if there were setbacks in the process.
