The city volunteers will work at major transport hubs, commercial networks, tourist attractions, various positions around the training and competition venues and the athletes' hotels.
A series of paper tests are to be firstly conducted at universities in Beijing, from where most applicants will come.
The Beijing Olympic organizing committee says the paper test mainly relates to the knowledge of the Olympic movement, Chinese history, culture and cross-cultural communication, social etiquette and first-aid skills.
Meanwhile, there is also a psychological assessment paper, determining the mental health of applicants.
Zhang Wentao, an official with the organizing committee says the most important thing volunteers should have is a good personality and altitude.
"We pay particular attention to the candidates' team work spirit, the sense of responsibility, and the ability of self-adjustment and self-motivation, since the volunteers' job might not be as fun as they thought. They could face pressure, so we need them to have strong self-motivation."
Zhang Wentao says the selection is competitive. For example, in Beijing-based People's University, there're 3000 applicants, but only a few hundred will be chosen.
Many students say they regard being a volunteer for Olympics a valuable experience. Zhang Xinxin is one of them.
"While preparing for the test I've got a lot of knowledge about the Olympics, and I know better about the culture and history of China and other countries. I feel such an experience has enriched my knowledge and vision itself."
