The housing market in Shanghai is heating up again as sale volumes continued to climb over the past month. The Shanghai Housing Trade Fair, which recently ended, made it apparent to all who participated. Our Shanghai correspondent Chen Simeng has the details. Reporter:
Although this fair opened its door to the public earlier this week, it continues to be the hottest place in town. Lines stretch through the room as prospective property owners line up for a prized pamphlets. The fair drew attendees from throughout China and even from overseas like Mr. Wong and his wife from Taiwan. "Shanghai is a cosmopolis. It is enjoying rapid construction now. I think the city is a good place to live and invest." The recent spur in demand for housing led over 150 property developers to participate in the fair. However most of the properties being offered have been on the market before, and back then at much lower rates. Many residents still find it difficult to find a suitable apartment at a reasonable price. "The price is too expensive. I can't accept it." "Some prices of the apartment are relatively low, but the location is too far from town. It would be very inconvenient for commuters."
According to reports from real estate agencies, Shanghai apartment sales rose significantly last month due to robust supply and investors pursuing other options as they cashed out of the stock market. 22,000 new apartments, with a combined gross floor area of 2,600 million square meters, were sold last month in the city, an increase of one-third in both categories from the previous month's total. In spite of the growing housing market, spokeswoman of Shanghai Municipal government Jiao Yang said the property supply in the city is sufficient; while experts advise resident not to rush for unreasonably priced real estate.
