A recent survey of Beijing's movie market finds that each resident of the city watches an average of only 0.8 movie each year, compared with the 5.5 movies watched in the U.S and the 2 movies in South Korea.
Professor Yin Hong from Tsinghua University says the figure show too few Chinese are watching movies at the detriment of the industry.
Meanwhile, China produced 330 movies last year, but two of them: the Banquet and Curse of the Golden Flower, accounted for over 1/4 of the total domestic movie revenue.
Professor Yin says this shows the audience can accept only a few movies out of what is currently being produced.
The survey also shows that over 89% of movie goers are young people aged under 35 and most of them go to cinema with their lovers.
But Professor Yin Hong points out that most Chinese movies fail to reach across to young movie-goers. Instead, they represent the values and interests of the middle-aged and elderly.
