Pork Price Hike, Who Will Be the Victim?
    2007-05-27 10:16:47     CRIENGLISH.com

Like the stock market, the soaring price of pork is also a hot topic in China these days.

In some places, the price of a kilo of pork has risen to as much as 20 Yuan or 2.6 US dollars.

The Beijing Youth Daily carries an article pointing out that the latest price hike in pork is only part of a general rise in food prices which started late last year.

Another view is that as most pigs are fed on grain based feed - and since the recent move towards bio-energy has pushed up the price of grain - this has had a knock-on effect on the cost of pork.

But whatever the reasons, it is generally acknowledged that the lives of not just low-income families, but also increasing numbers of middle-income ones, will be negatively affected.

The paper says the government can't just leave this situation for the market to sort out and says that either price be controlled or overall salaries raised.
