The 7th Chinese National Games for the Disabled have opened in the city of Kunming in southwestern China.
At the opening ceremony, Chinese swimmer Wang Xiaofu, who has five world records to his credit and will compete in nine events at the Games, ignited the flame that will burn throughout the duration of the event.
The games are the biggest ever of their kind in China with more than 2,200 athletes from 35 delegations taking part.
Philip Graven, the president of the International Paralympics Committee, sent his greetings and congratulations in a letter to the games' organizers.
He says China has made great strides in the development of Paralympics sports which will be showcased at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics Games. He adds that as an important member of the Paralympics family, China is making valuable contributions to the movement.
The one-week games will run in both Kunming and the neighboring city of Yuxi.
